Reasons why Writing is Great

R is for Reasons Why Writing is Great

Writing is my passion, so of course I think it is great. And if you are here then that means you mostly likely think it is great too.

Here are 13 reasons why writing is great:

·         You can create your own world, the people in it, and let your imagination run wild.

·        You can live vicariously through your characters, and go anywhere in the world. (Through writing I have been in car chases, shootouts, and battles. I’ve been to other worlds and states I’ve never even visited.)

·         It is a wonderful tool to vent your emotions, from anger to sorrow.

·         You can kill off people you don’t like by making them antagonists.

·        You can give your past to your characters to gain new perspective and even explore different outcomes.

·         Reading books counts as research.

·         You get to meet many fabulous writers and authors.

·         You have the opportunity to share your work with people who appreciate it.

·        The book you write could one day be on the same shelf with books by your favorite authors.

·        You have the chance to impact the literary world, or create a legacy to pass down to your children and grandchildren.

·        (Thank you, Madeline, this is also one of my favorite reasons.) For once in your life, you get to be the bad guy on the page, and get away with it.

·        (Thank you, Stephanie F! I don’t know how I forgot this!) You can write from the comfort of your bed. In your pajamas.

·        (Thank you to Kristin for this one.) It’s an escape and sometimes our only way to stay sane.

SHARE: If you can think of another reason why writing is great, let me know and I’ll add it to the list! :D

  1. Getting to blow stuff up as my character is fun!
Only thing I'd add is that through the experience, we learn and grow as a person.

    1. Getting to blow stuff up is fun! :P Oh yes, we definitely do grow as people through writing. :)

  2. It is a wonderful tool for venting our emotions. I use it (usually subconsciously), many times for that purpose. Creating make believe helps me work out my 'real' believe. LOL

  4. Getting to be the bad guy, the villain, on the page since I wouldn't do any of those things in real life. At least I hope I wouldn't! :)

  5. My top reason it's great this Monday morning is: You can do all that from the comfort of your sofa, with a comfy quilt over your lap, while the world is out rushing to work and dealing with mean people!

  7. Writing is great because it exercises the mind. :-)

  8. This is a great list of reasons that apply to me as well!! For me, as a mother, writing is a great outlet, and the keeper of my sanity. It allows me to create and still be a stay-at-home-mom. And the best part? I agree with Stephanie--it's great to be able to write in your pajamas in a cozy location!

Another great reason? It gives you an excuse to create a playlist to go along with your current WIP (if you listen to music while writing, that is).

  9. Writing is indeed great! A writer's revenge can be unique: be nice to me, or I'll write you into my next book in all your ugly/mean glory. Also, the joy of words themselves, they're great, they can be put together in so many marvellous ways: alliteration, similes, metaphor, poetry, prose - and every writer's style is unique :)

  10. I think you pretty much summed it up here, Chrys! My favorite part is creating my own world when I write. I literally get lost in the surroundings and the journeys I create for my characters. As authors, we get to experience what our characters go through and walk in their shoes. It is truly one of the greatest gifts we have! And if we ever get to fearful or sad, we can always step out and observe before heading back in again. We are blessed to be able to love what we do=)

  11. Can go anywhere and do pretty much anything you like with writing, best things indeed

  12. It's also one of those addictions that's actually healthy for you. :)

  13. Love this, Chrys! I would add that watching movies can also count as research. :) Of course, nothing beats reading!! You can write anywhere. You just need a pen and some paper!

    1. Of course! I've watched a lot of movies for research. ;)

    Great list!

  17. Nice! I'm all for the one about reading as research. I don't even have to feel bad--because my hubby tolerates my mental time away as research. Good stuff.

  18. Since I'm a spinster and will probably never marry, given my track record, I can live vicariously through my characters' happy, normal romances. It also gives me a chance to travel the world, and visit places like Iran (which I'm planning to visit for research anyway), Georgia, Armenia, Russia, Estonia, Hungary, France, Yemen, and, someday, Japan. It also lets me experience living in New York City when it was still possible for normal, non-rich people to live there.

    1. I can relate to your comment, Carrie-Anne. I may never marry either, and my characters do let me live different lives and romances.

  20. It's sometimes both difficult and thrilling trying to figure out where your characters and the plot go, or how they fit with each other. Discuss it with a non-writer and they say: "It's your story! Why don't you just write your way around it?" But they don't understand the way a writer understands.

    ReplyDelete

    1. No, non-writers don't understand. That is something I've been battling my whole life with my siblings.

  21. One of the things I love about writing is that you can be whoever you want to be. Your characters can be versions of yourself, or they can be the complete opposite of you.

  22. Great list. I would add that you get to meet so many like-minded people both in person and online.

  23. I like the way we can bend and twist reality to suit our stories as well as being able to play around with historical events and enter into the realm of fantasy.

  24. I like the new worthwhile connections I make with like-minded people. And we get to discuss and brainstorm even though we are strangers!

And of course all your reasons, too!

  29. I agree with all these. Writing is a way to live different lives and explore different aspects of ourselves.

  30. Great post! It's a nice reminder of all we have to be thankful for. Here's two more reasons: writers can be their own bosses and can do their work from anywhere in the world.

Oh, and some of us--if we are very lucky--can let others know that they are not alone in what they're feeling.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Very true! I did say you can write in bed, so I think that includes anywhere in the world. ;) We are our own bosses . . . until we get editors and publishers who want us to do edits, etc.

  31. I can put happily ever after endings where there were none and nasty forks and twists in the journey where they should have been and the ogres of my childhood all die in excruciating pain. Yes I do like the power writing gives me over the past. :)

    1. I use my past all the time to heal and to explore happy endings. :)

  32. All good reasons. The reason I write is because I can't help it :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I like this list of reasons. It basically covers all of mine! I also write because after a time I like to go back and read what I had written years earlier. Sometimes it turns out the writing was dreadful and I had forgotten it for good reason (haha) but other times it is good enough to help me remember what emotions had gone into those words remind me who I was.

    1. I also enjoy reading what I've written years ago. It shows me how much I've grown but sometimes it surprises me. :)
