I’ve got a kid’s nature project that you can do with your kids, grandkids, or nieces and nephews. I did this project with my nephews when they were younger. It’s easy and fun.

Nature in a Frame

Need:

·         A picture frame
·         White glue
·         Flowers, leaves, etc.
·         A paper bag or basket for collecting
·         Glitter for extra decorating

Steps:

1. Take the kids to a park, your backward, or some other area that is rich in nature where the kids can pick up leaves, flowers, petals, grass, and whatever else they see that catches their fancy.
TIP #1: Give the kids a paper bag or basket to hold their nature goodies.
TIP #2:  Keep an eye on them. Not only can they wonder, but they may end up picking something up that is not good, such as a cigarette butt. My oldest nephew found a bottle cap. When I told him he couldn’t use it he said, “But you said anything.” Yes, the one time he listens. :P
Carmello, my youngest nephew, loved his big leaf.

2. When you’re back home, lay out the items they found on a table. Cut a piece of paper (any color) that they can glue their findings onto.

3. Give them glue and let them apply glue to the items and stick them on the paper in whatever pattern they want. (My oldest nephew said he made a ninja.)
TIP #3: Make sure they leave a little edge so the flowers, etc. don’t get crushed by the frame.
TIP #4: Teach them how to use only a little bit of glue. (Just a dot, not a lot.)

4. When they are done, put the frame back together. Show them their masterpiece and find a place for it on the wall.
TIP #5: If they want to use a stick, find a deep frame or remove the glass.

TIP #6: You can have them write their names at the top of the paper and even put glitter on it like my nephews did.

  6. What a great idea! My daughter is forever picking up leaves and twigs. She even brought a big branch round to the back garden, had me stick it in the ground, and now it's her "tree" that is sprouting leaves. Love your nephews' smiles!

    1. Exactly! Kids are always picking things up (flowers, grass), so why not give them something to do with it?

  8. This is cute! Kids always love stuff with their name on it, too, so it's perfect!

    1. I mostly put their names of it so they wouldn't get them mixed up. Haha. But you're right, they do. :)

  9. This is cute (as are your nephews). I had not seen this particular project before, but it does sound like fun! When my kids were younger, we spent a lot of time at the park looking for new buds growing in the spring on plants :)

  12. I'm about ready to ask if I can work for the local Orthodox day camp again, after not working there last year, since I haven't found any other work in this area. We did lots of crafts projects with the kids, both religious and secular. I was stuck with the nursery bunk the second and third years I worked there, so they were a bit more limited in their arts and crafts skills. Most of them, for example, just moved their paintbrush around the canvas and covered it with random colors, so thickly the paper ripped or needed days to dry.

  16. Do I have to work with kids??? :) OK I am not a kid sort of gal unless it is my niece who is now 20 or my friend's kids who would destroy things. I did show my niece how to make a card and she was quite good. I didn't let her use the heating too because it does get very, very hot. She loved to stamp at that time

  20. What a great project! I'd love to do something like that with my son, but he has zero interest in artistic stuff. Hmm... maybe if I make finding the stuff into a scavenger hunt... ;)

  21. What a fun activity! Your nephews are soooo very cute! Ikea sells a 'shadow box' frame for pretty cheap. That might be a nice way to incorporate chunkier nature elements. Great idea, Chrys and a nice share!

  24. That is such a cute idea :) When I did my student teaching, I had my 2nd graders keep a weather journal for a week where they drew pictures and wrote descriptions of the weather each day. That produced some interesting results and they seemed to enjoy it.

    1. A weather journal...I love that idea! I'm going to have my nephews every Friday this summer, so having them do a weather journal while they are away would be a neat idea. I'm going to do that!

  29. Carmello is adorable! And his art pieces are excellent (tell him that, won't you, Chrys?) My niece is two and she likes picking up leaves and twigs on her walks. I'll have to try this project with her when she's old enough to handle glue.

  30. What a fun project! My grandson, 'Captain You-name-it', collects rocks (of all things, here in the desert!) most of which are full of pretty sparkles, others are worthy candidates for his rock tumbler. He hangs with me two or three days a week in the summer and has had a Friday night sleep-over since he was born!
